Stephen Webster Q&A: Making it as a Jeweller and Favourite Statement Pieces

Stephen Webster began his journey towards becoming an internationally renowned jeweller at just the age of 16. The brand that shares his name combines a passion for craftsmanship with contemporary inspirations to create glamorous jewellery items like no others.

We spoke to the man himself to ask more about his career – from early days to key achievements – along finding out what essential items he thinks you should have in your jewellery box!

What inspired you to pursue a career as a jeweller?

I was going to study fashion design at the Medway College in Kent and by chance walked into a jewellery design class rather than the fashion design room. The flames, noise, chemicals and shiny objects were instantly appealing.

I broke into the jewellery industry by taking an apprenticeship in Canada when I finished college and was very lucky to work with a man with an incredible passion and knowledge of gems. I was fascinated by the different stones I was given and was allowed complete freedom to work with them. This was the job where I built my confidence as a designer and maker and learned how to communicate with a client.

Where do you look for inspiration?

It has always been my passion to cultivate jewellery collections that push all creative boundaries; are high on innovation and are unreservedly cool. My love of music has also really influenced my style; it has been my passion from very early days.

All of my work is a reflection of my personality and I am inspired from the objects, sights and people around me. This can be anything from the sea, gems, film noir, tattoos, architecture, broken glass, even fish bones.

I am fortunate that selfishly, I have pursued topics and inspirations from my life’s experiences and translated them into our many collections.

Of what achievement in your career are you most proud?

Being awarded an MBE for craftsmanship and training in the jewellery industry was a great honour and means so much to me and everyone at Stephen Webster. We have a passion for the craft and skills required to be great jewellers.

Do you have a favourite piece from your collections?

I love the Japanese Fighting Fish series; they are probably the most challenging pieces of jewellery we have ever made. Titanium can be a very difficult material to work with but the intense blue could only be achieved using Titanium and setting it with a graduation of black spinels to blue sapphires to white diamonds.

These pieces really are a perfect example of our design philosophy together with expert craftsmanship – in fact the bracelet from this collection is in the Victoria and Albert museum in London!

What key piece do you think every woman should have in their jewellery box?

Every woman should have a beautiful bracelet. This can be flexible or a cuff and often worn as the balance to a watch. A great bracelet is empowering and can help when having to face life’s tribulations.

The other must-have is a big colourful ring. Nothing is more hypnotic than a hand sporting a knuckle-dusting conversation piece!

What would be your advice to jewellers of the future?

I am always giving advice to people wanting to be jewellery designers. Mostly, it’s be patient and get some good training from an expert. This may seem a little traditionalist but this is a slow traditional business with very few overnight stars.

However, if you make it, it is also one of the greatest industries. We work with the finest materials, create things that make people happy and if you are lucky, get to see the world too.
