Dubrovnik Travel Guide

The ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, Dubrovnik’s beautifully preserved ancient architecture, sun-soaked climate and vibrant local culture and cuisine make for a perfect city break.

The Croatian city emerged from a period of sieges in the early nineties into the tranquil getaway destination it is today, famous for its iconic red tiled rooftops and narrow cobbled streets. Here’s our guide to the best things to eat, see and do in the city.

Where to Stay

Book Villa Mediteran for a private, luxe hideaway with friends – part of Rusticae’s collection of boutique hotels. The 1930s villa is close to Pile Gate, the main entrance to the Old Town and a ten-minute walk through a pine forest to the beautiful Danče or Šulić beaches.

For a hotel option, five-star Villa Orsula, bookable through our travel partner Elegant Resorts, is perched on a clifftop and overlooks the UNESCO-protected forest island of Lokrum. Meander through its sunken courtyards and soak up the stunning views of the Adriatic Sea.

What to Do

A must-do is a walking tour of the Old Town. Today, the ancient walled city is best known as the backdrop for blockbusters: the Old City doubles up as Game of Thrones’ King’s Landing, and the next Star Wars filmed scenes there too. A tour also allows you to contrast the beautifully preserved old town with the new. Make sure to visit local artist Ivo Grbic’s gallery for art depicting the impact of the Balkans war.

Dubrovnik is close to a string of stunning islands, quickly and easily accessible by boat. For a peaceful day out, visit the Elaphite Islands and take advantage of the crystal clear Adriatic waters. The island of Lopud is home to pretty beaches, gelaterias, and a great harbourside fish restaurant, Obala

Further out of town, visit the Konavle region for hiking, cycling and wine tasting. Make sure to sample the best of the region’s produce – like local cheeses, courgettes, tomatoes and fragrant lavender. Don’t forget to visit the Odysseus Cave, the mythological cave on the island of Mljet. According to legend, Odysseus found shelter in this cave when hiding from a storm.

Where to Eat

For an upscale Croatian restaurant with a focus on locally sourced food, try Nautika. Ask for an outdoor table and you’ll have a gorgeous view over the sea and the defensive walls of the Old City. Adventurous eaters should visit Kopun – their house dish is a local recipe of castrated rooster.

Stop for a sundowner at one of the city’s numerous wine bars: wine pairs particularly well with a local sheeps’ milk cheese called pag. And look out for Dalmation specialities like squid ink risotto, slow-cooked lamb and plump olives.

What to Pack

Dubrovnik is a city made for exploring on foot so keep your daytime outfit comfortable yet chic with stylish separates and flat loafers. An across-body bag will ensure you’re hands-free for taking photographs of the stunning cityscape.

Come evening switch into an off-the-shoulder dress – this summer’s style must-have – with some dramatic earrings that will elongate the neck and draw attention to the décolletage.
