Inspired by Travel: A Guide to Holiday Wanderlust

With winter well and truly on its way, we’re dreaming of making an escape to somewhere fabulously warm. To help us plan, we consulted with Liz & Lavender travel blogger, Liz Wible. Just over a year ago, she and her husband decided to pack up and go on an adventure around the world. We managed to pin Liz down to hear her top tips for eco-friendly travel, and the brands to trust she couldn’t live without.

What inspired you to quit your day job and pursue a less conventional, eco-friendly lifestyle?

A few months ago I started to feel quite restless at my work desk knowing I wasn’t pursuing my true passions. I started reading articles about others who were leading the lifestyle I wanted which led to it starting to feel a bit less like a far-off dream and a bit more like a realistic one.

With a great deal of luck, timing, and courage we decided not to renew our apartment’s lease and go for it by booking the most affordable one-way ticket to Europe from Boston that we could find. That ended up being Copenhagen. We’ve been living out of suitcases since and have never been happier.

How can we minimise our environmental impact while travelling?

Prior to leaving for our adventure, my partner and I did our best to live an eco-conscious lifestyle in Boston, Massachusetts – from purchasing any meat we consumed from a sustainable butcher to only dining at locally owned cafes and restaurants.

We try our best to purchase fresh produce from farmers’ markets, instead of supermarket chains. Actually, we try our best to avoid chains of any sort in the hopes of supporting local makers and businesses. I will say, one thing travelling has opened our eyes to was how much we relied on machine drying our laundry back home! None of our accommodation has had one which is much better for the environment, anyway.

What are your top winter destinations?

I loved Berlin – it felt like the perfect blend between two of my favourite places, Brooklyn (in New York) and Copenhagen. Brooklyn for the unique people and abundance of concept stores and Copenhagen for the picturesque architecture and cobblestone streets. I love how diverse the city is and the impact that that has on its food choices.

What are your favourite Positive Luxury brands to trust?

I am so happy to have discovered Artha through Positive Luxury. I love that this company was founded by a mother-daughter duo and especially love the opportunities they provide to rural artisans around the world through their business model. There isn’t a single product on their site that I don’t find beautiful and each one is linked to a story about the makers and their process.

I’ve been so excited to see Weleda just about everywhere while traveling through Europe – Skin Food is MAGIC in a tiny green tube and after reading more about the brand’s positive actions on Positive Luxury I look forward to filling my suitcase up before leaving.
