Now the Christmas decorations are down, it can sometimes leave your home looking a little tired. January provides the perfect time to reflect on what you really need to live comfortably and happily.
Here are our simple tips to freshen up your space and give it a lift for the new year.
Upgrade an item
Start off by unpacking those gifts, finding homes for new pieces and swapping out any upgrades to prevent unnecessary clutter. Take some time to think about what you really need and what you’ve fallen out of love with. As Marie Kondo says in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying-Up, only keep the things that spark joy.
Maybe it’s time to get rid of the spare chairs that never get used, or perhaps replace that mismatched crockery for something special. If it’s still in good condition, donate unwanted goods to local charity shops, otherwise you can contact your local council to find out how to dispose of products responsibly.
Swap pieces around
You don’t need to completely redecorate to overhaul your living space – try moving smaller furniture pieces or home accessories between rooms to bring a fresh look. Side tables can be interchanged with bedside tables, while you’d be surprised at the difference a rug can make to a living space. We love the fluffy decadence of Alpaca Plush’s fur throws and rugs for transforming a room in an instant.
Add a dash of colour
Bright textiles and cushions are the simplest way to bring a joyful new year spirit into living spaces and bedrooms. Give visual depth to your space by playing with textures and colour.
We love the Age of Reason eye and lips cushions to add an artistic, rock ‘n roll vibe. Alternatively, you can opt for striking geometric graphics, such as Sep’s Islamic-inspired designs, which are made using hand embroidery techniques that have been passed down through generations of women with the aim to preserve cultural craftsmanship. Both brands have been awarded the Butterfly Mark, making them #brandstotrust.
Lighting is everything
You must have heard of the Hygge trend by now? Hailing from Denmark, it’s all about getting cosy and making your home welcoming. Conserve energy by maximising on natural light — orient the furniture of your social spaces around windows, and use light-coloured curtains.
In the evening, opt for soft mood lighting that will bathe your space in a warm glow, with energy-efficient lighting. Try an adjustable lamp such as the original classic Anglepoise lamp, and scented, natural candles are essential of course. We love the fragrances from Le Labo for a gorgeous long-lasting scent.
Put it on display
Emphasise the artistry of your favourite designer items by putting them centre stage to showcase your sense of style. Some of your investment pieces are iconic, limited edition designs that will one day belong to a museum collection.
Celebrate a beautiful bag or pair of shoes by creating an eye-catching display with plinths created by modular shelving units, or even your best coffee table Taschen books. Items can be easily switched around every few months to update your room each season so that these fine pieces are less likely to be forgotten about in the back of a cupboard.
